I’m A Mom Who Loves The Child Harness

I am a mom who loves the child harness. There are a couple different types of child harnesses, we have the backpack style. It’s a tool that we use as we teach our toddlers to hold onto a hand while we are out and about.

But the child harness has gotten a really bad reputation over the last couple years. It’s often compared to a pet leash as a counter argument against them.

And I get it. A pet leash and child harness look very similar. I’m pretty sure I have used the leash part of Jordan’s backpack harness as a leash to walk our dog when I couldn’t find hers. But there is one huge difference between a pet leash and a child harness. It’s the context in which they are used.

When I have Jordan wear her child harness, it’s not a way to ‘walk’ her. It’s a parenting tool I use to help keep her safer. It’s there as a fail safe.

Jordan is a runner and explorer. We are teaching her to hold onto the stroller, cart, or hand when we are out in busy places. But she’s 2, and she’s fast – except when I actually need her to be fast. She’s gone in a second. And, unfortunately, it only takes a second for a tragic accident or kidnapping to happen. So I use a child harness as a tool until she is old enough that I can trust her to stay by my side.

Are there parents that abuse a child harness, and use it as a leash to ‘walk’ their child like a pet? Absolutely. And it’s not okay, or funny. To me, it’s an abuse of power. Those parents are not using a child harness as a tool to help keep their kids safe. They are using it simply because they can, and they think it’s funny.

Whether you agree with child harnesses or not, those are the parents that should be singled out on social media. The ones who purposely use a child harness just to exercise their parental power. Not the parents who choose to use it as a tool.

If you still don’t agree with the use of a child harness, that’s okay. That’s your choice to make. I respect your choice. All I ask in return is that you respect mine as a mom who loves the child harness.

I didn’t like them when they first came out – but after my child almost ran into traffic, I think they are a lifesaver!

I’ve got a rambunctious toddler too! We needed a harness too! ACK! I never thought I’d be that mom. I’ve ben checking out other harnesses tho because honestly not a big fan of the skip hop back pack for a ‘leash’ like style.

A great tool when you have a baby in a stroller and a 2yr old walking beside (or let’s face it, not beside you). You can’t run after a child with a stroller very easily.
